Parametric Muqarnas
TUBITAK (NSF) Grant Research Project
Title: Development of Computational Tools for Design Processes of Geometric Pattern Based Muqarnas
Role: Project Coordinator, Grant Recipient
Team: Sema Alacam (Researcher, ITU), Altan Başık, Yusuf Aykın, Sevgi Altun, Cem Güneş
Status: Completed.
This research focuses on automating the design and modeling of muqarnas elements in Anatolian Seljukid architecture, redefining their geometric rules using digital techniques. By integrating 3D modeling, point cloud scanning, and parametric design into architectural history, the project aims to revive this traditional design element for contemporary use, offering valuable data and digital resources. The goal is to establish a digital framework for interdisciplinary research on historical architectural elements within our cultural heritage, making Islamic art and architecture more accessible and adaptable to current parametric modeling and digital production strategies.
The project’s research outcomes have been published in Journal on Computing and Cultural Heritage and Nexus Network Journal and presented at conferences and in symposium.
